Anyone who, like me, has been listening to music very intensely for several decades is inevitably constantly on the lookout for something extraordinary that stands out from the crowd. If you want to be inspired in this regard, it's always worth taking a look at the lineup of the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, the Netherlands.

In 2022, the Belgians Wyatt E., founded in 2015, played there, providing just the right stuff for truffle pigs like me. The identity of the musicians is not known, so we are dealing with a mystery on several levels here. Stylistically, we are moving in the realm of experimental metal, with the main ingredients being doom, drone and ambient. However, I admit that labelling doesn't help at all here and that it's best to plunge into the sound experience completely unprejudiced.

Just in time for the beginning of the new year, Wyatt E. present Zamāru Ultu Qereb Ziqquratu Part 1, their third studio album. I'm already making a bold claim and predict that these 35 minutes will be among the most stunning releases of 2025.

The listener is given the opportunity to delve deep into Mesopotamian myths, which are largely performed purely instrumentally. The 5 songs unfold, you guessed it, in their full splendour in a darkened room with headphones.

Those who embark on this journey will soon find themselves in a distant, dazzling world - an oriental soundtrack of breathtaking intensity. The whole thing is rounded off by wonderfully dreamy, evocative female vocals in Aramaic and Akkadian, which give me goosebumps and finally bring the desert to life in my living room.

In short: Zamāru Ultu Qereb Ziqquratu Part 1 is art. It is music for genuine music lovers. Music for the niche within the niche, a sparkling diamond for true nerds. I am extremely grateful to have discovered this marvellous band for myself. Wyatt E. will probably become regulars at the aforementioned Roadburn Festival in the years to come. Let's hope Part 2 will be launched very soon...
