If you're only marginally familiar with Van Halen, you probably know “Jump“ or “Panama“ from the big seller 1984. Well, even though these are undoubtedly two awesome songs, there's no question that the quartet from Pasadena, California has many more outstanding compositions to offer.

Some of them can be found on the legendary self-titled debut album from 1978. To this day, guitarists from all over the world still regularly testify with shining eyes how influential Amsterdam-born Eddie van Halen was, who had a lasting impact on the rock world with his revolutionary playing on his self-made ‘Frankenstrat‘. Anyone who listens to the instrumental “Eruption“, the second track on Van Halen, can only throw themselves on the ground in awe.

However, Van Halen was never a one-man show: alongside Eddie, his brother Alex (drums) and Michael Anthony (bass) also impress in every respect. In my opinion, this also applies to singer David Lee Roth, who, even in his heyday, was never one of the best in his field, but he had a highly recognisable voice. There's no need to say a word about his extraordinary on-stage entertainment skills, where he could easily measure up to the all-time greats.

Van Halen deserves its place on this list because it is a real hit firework without any filler: the opener “Runnin‘ with the Devil“, like “Ain't Talkin‘ ‘bout Love“, is some of the best hard rock ever produced, and the Kinks cover “You Really Got Me“ leaves nothing to be desired. Equally fantastic is the sound quality, and the iconic cover art, which captures the spirit of the young Van Halen perfectly. In my opinion, there is probably no other hard rock release that radiates more passion for life and untamed energy. If you want to brighten up dark days, this is the perfect choice.
