Who among us doesn't like to take a little trip back in time every now and then to escape from the daily grind? Now, whether I, as a historian, can speak for the general public in this regard, I'll leave unanswered, but I have had a soft spot for sixties and seventies sounds for as long as I can remember. In my opinion, music never sounded better.
This view is obviously shared by The Heavy Heavy. The British quintet is fully committed to the sound of the two decades mentioned above. If I didn't know any better, I would think that their debut album One of a Kind is a pearl that I have yet to discover, and that has suddenly appeared on my radar. Both musically and in terms of sound, we are moving in the late sixties and early seventies. Therefore I feel completely at home.
The vocals of William Turner and Georgie Fuller are a real strength, complementing each other beautifully – I particularly love the two-part harmonies. This creates numerous magical moments, for example in “Wild Emotion“ – one of many real hits presented to us by the English, along with “Happiness“, “Feel“ and “Lemonade“, among others.
And so we come to a crucial aspect: The Heavy Heavy not only create a pleasant atmosphere that takes you back to the glory past. No, the band has the talent to write powerful, memorable songs. Of course, the works of their predecessors shine through at every turn, but I don't need to list them all. One of a Kind is a record that manages the feat of sounding both retro and fresh.
Besides the already mentioned vocals, the instrumentation is a delight – luckily, every musician is clearly audible. Whether it's the unagitated but effective drumming, the cool basslines (check out “Cherry“) or the amazing and varied guitar work, The Heavy Heavy deliver the highest quality, with great attention to detail.
I sincerely hope that I will be able to see the band live in the near future – One of a Kind is a debut with a fat exclamation mark. Since there are fortunately a lot of retro fans like me, the British could have a promising career ahead of them, especially since the old heroes are gradually leaving and people are longing for artists who carry the torch in their spirit.
