If you like classic rock music, which is mainly stylistically based in the late 60s and 70s, you are currently spoilt for choice. Fortunately, there are now numerous young bands reviving the music of their old heroes at the highest level, while incorporating many of their own ideas. The English band Silveroller is undoubtedly one of these promising artists.

Whether you consider At Dawn a long EP or a short album, given its playing time of 27 minutes, is up to you. The artwork, which evokes hippie feelings, nostalgia and yearning for distant places in equal measure, is particularly well done. Here, the packaging matches the content perfectly.

At Dawn starts with a proper hit: “Black Crow“ offers everything classic rock fans love in just under four minutes. I especially like the extremely cool riffing and the catchy vocal lines. Fortunately, this high level is maintained in the following five tracks, in which all the participating musicians are allowed to step into the limelight. In particular, the organ sets plenty of accents – and catapults the listener back to the 70s, when bands like Deep Purple or Rainbow were at their creative peak.

However, At Dawn doesn't just sound retro: the fact that we are not dealing with a forgotten pearl from the aforementioned period can be heard in the production, which matches the music but is not artificially aged. A varied rock epic like “Turn to Gold“, which impresses with particularly beautiful choirs, sounds absolutely timeless and could be played on any radio station with taste alongside current hits. The latter applies even more to “Other Side“, which is an impressive mixture of rocky hardness and poppy chorus.

In short: Silveroller set a first exclamation mark in their young career with At Dawn due to strong songwriting and the very good performance of all musicians. Unfortunately, the band has had to cope with some lineup changes since the release of their debut in March of this year. Whether this will lead to a loss of quality in the future, I cannot say; the next album will reveal that. I remain optimistic, especially since live videos of the newly assembled band are a lot of fun!
