Queen were my first great passion in music. One of the main reasons for this was my music teacher, who delighted us with “We Will Rock You“ in class in 1992. What I heard coming out of the speakers blew me away. I had never experienced anything like it before – and I realized immediately that I wanted to get to know every note from this magnificent band.
A few months later, I already owned the entire discography. Although I still like “We Will Rock You“ to this day, this track would probably no longer be in my Queen top 50 because Freddie, Brian, Roger and John have many more brilliant compositions to their name.
Several of them can be found on their first greatest hits compilation, which, by the way, was released almost exactly one month before I was born in 1981. There are probably few best-of albums that maintain such a dizzyingly high level over a running time of almost an hour. Opening a release with “Bohemian Rhapsody“, “Another One Bites the Dust“ and “Killer Queen“ puts you in a league that 99% of all bands can only dream of.
Over the last three decades, “Don't Stop Me Now“ and “Save Me“ have become my favourites, which I can basically always listen to without not being thrilled for a second. However, this applies to almost all tunes – no wonder, when one of the best singers of all time, one of the best guitarists of all time and perhaps the best rhythm section in rock history can be admired.
Hardly surprising that nearly every generation discovers Queen for itself at some point. This music is completely timeless and will, I'm sure, still be played in 100 years.
Note: As part of this special, I am posting my 100 favorite records. Full-length albums, compilations and EPs are all included. Live albums will be considered in another special. The first 75 records will be posted in no particular order. The top 25 will be ranked.
