Every music fan who regularly spends time in the underground can name numerous artists whose lack of wider attention is baffling. One band that undoubtedly falls into this category is On Atlas' Shoulders: although the guys from Frankfurt already have two solid full-length albums and an equally convincing EP in their discography, they are unfortunately still not regulars at the various German underground festivals, where they could gradually build up a loyal following.
Let's start with the wonderful artwork, for which singer Marius is responsible. This year, I have only come across very few records that could keep up with Aion in this regard. Since the eye listens too, it is already 1:0 before the first note.
As on the previous releases, the band's playing skills are once again striking on the third long player. Thanks to their musical abilities, the guys are able to perform their sometimes quite sophisticated songs excellently. Both heavy and power and even prog metal fans will get their money's worth here. Although, in relation to On Atlas' Shoulders, I would advise against pigeonholing, as the band has a quite unique style.
Marius' vocals fit in well with this, characterised by truly inventive lines – just listen to “Swallow the Sun“ attentively. His voice is highly distinctive, so the Germans have the potential to stand out from the crowd on that basis alone. They also do so thanks to the fantastic riffing of Benjamin and Björn – who, by the way, is responsible for the mixing and mastering – which is marked by creativity that is way above average.
Since the album is 37 minutes long and of a consistently high standard, there is no particular track that jumps out. If you're short of time, I'd recommend two of the three pre-release singles, “Gunslingers“ and “Wings of Icarus“. At the latest, after the epic title track, which also features Jeff Black (Gatekeeper/Spell), you'll hit the order button.
In short, On Atlas' Shoulders prove once more that they are one of the most exciting up-and-coming metal bands that Germany currently has to offer. They are superb at combining complexity with catchiness. It is to be hoped that these enormously talented artists will reach the right reviewers with Aion, who can do their part to get as many people as possible enthusiastic about this music.
