When people ask me about my favourite decade in music, I answer without hesitation: The 70s, of course! Never has rock music been greater, never have so many timeless classics been released in such a short period - just think of Paranoid, The Dark Side of the Moon or A Night at the Opera, for example.
Kant revive the spirit of this decade. With Paranoia Pilgrimage, the quartet from Aschaffenburg, who describe their style as heavy indie psych, present a gem that is deeply rooted in the 70s, but at the same time sounds incredibly fresh.
The songs have a mysterious and somewhat occult flavour - the latter is reinforced by the vocals, which are more in the background than usual in the mix and thus have a quite conjuring effect. You can't escape the intense atmosphere, on the contrary, it's very difficult to tear yourself away from it, the addictive potential is high. Fortunately, there's the repeat button!
I have to emphasise the lead guitars: the wonderful, varied melodies and the grandiose, expansive solos are reminiscent of old heroes. Without having seen Kant live to date, I'm sure it must be a pleasure to listen to the six-stringers up close in a small club.
But the rhythm section is also convincing across the board: the drums set brilliant accents, are enormously playful and multi-faceted. Fortunately, the bass is also very audible, so you can enjoy the creative playing. In general, it's worth concentrating on different instruments alternately during several listening sessions. This allows you to appreciate the full class of Paranoia Pilgrimage.
In terms of quality, also thanks to the excellent sound, this is a release that meets the highest standards. It's great that this marvellous, handmade music is still being created in 2024. There are enough lovers of such sounds to buck the trends and revive a time when rock ruled the world and the rock scene was bursting with creativity.
